IPA 21

The "Interdisciplinary Project Activity" took the students of the study programme Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems to the “Rhenish Right Bank Corridor” of Cologne in the week before the start of the semester. Many exciting insights were gained during this week, which will be elaborated into an integrated development strategy by the students in the course of the semester.

As part of the "Interdisciplinary Project Activity" (IPA) in the 3rd semester of the Master's degree programme Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems, the students' task is to design and elaborate an integrated spatial development strategy. In the autumn semester 2021, the " Rhenish Right Bank Corridor” (RRK) of Cologne was chosen as the project location by the organizing team STL and SPUR. The task is to draw up a development strategy and vision for the RRK with a time horizon of 2040. The challenge of the task is to work simultaneously on different levels of scale, to weigh multiple demands against each other and to further develop the RRK not only as an international transit axis but also as an urban and living space for the people of Cologne.

As starting event for the task ahead, a study trip to Cologne took place in the week before the semester. In addition to an intensive exchange with those responsible for the city strategy "Cologne Perspectives 2030+" and the "Cologne-Bonn Agglomeration Concept" - from which the idea of the RRK originated - the students explored the area on their own and developed an understanding of the area as well as produced initial ideas for the further development of the RRK. It was an intensive and successful start to the new semester and we look forward to the students' contributions to this exciting and highly relevant task in Cologne.
